Scouting
as a worldwide movement turns 100 years old on 1 August 2007. This is
the centenary of the first camp held by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the
founder of Scouting. Events are being held throughout the year all across
New Zealand. All people with an interest in Scouting are welcome to attend
public centenary celebration events.
At present there are over 28 million Scouts, youth and adults, in 216
countries and territories in the world organisation of the Scout Movement.
By 2007 it is estimated that over 500 million women and men from most
countries and cultures in the world will have pledged to live by the Scout
Promise and Law.
On 1 August 2007, at 8am (NZ time) New Zealand will be one of the first
countries to participate in the Scouting’s Sunrise, a worldwide
event where every Scout member and Scouting supporter is invited to take
part in renewing their Scout Promise. Public events will be held in each
of the main centres.
