Scouting as a worldwide movement turns 100 years old on 1 August 2007. This is the centenary of the first camp held by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting. Events are being held throughout the year all across New Zealand. All people with an interest in Scouting are welcome to attend public centenary celebration events.

At present there are over 28 million Scouts, youth and adults, in 216 countries and territories in the world organisation of the Scout Movement. By 2007 it is estimated that over 500 million women and men from most countries and cultures in the world will have pledged to live by the Scout Promise and Law.

On 1 August 2007, at 8am (NZ time) New Zealand will be one of the first countries to participate in the Scouting’s Sunrise, a worldwide event where every Scout member and Scouting supporter is invited to take part in renewing their Scout Promise. Public events will be held in each of the main centres.

In1908 the first scout troop was formed in Kaiapoi near Christchurch-
