Training course information for adult leaders in the Scouting Counties and Manukau Zones |
Scouting
uses both formal and informal schemes for training adult leaders. A schedule of
courses and dates
may be found by accessing the "Calendar" (see above). Application
forms for the formal courses may be
found under "Forms".
The SCOUTS New Zealand Training Framework
(Also called the Wood Badge scheme)
The formal Adult Leaders Training Scheme for Scouting NZ is in four stages.

Introductory Training
(2 hours) |
a presentation by the Group Leader
to people who are interested in learning about SCOUTS in the local community.
Must be completed before applying for a SCOUTS Warrant to lead young people. |

2 |
Initial Training |
4 courses run at your home or at a
local venue that provide leaders with the skills to lead a section in SCOUTS.
The focus is on understanding the concepts and methodologies involved in
running the weekly meetings.

3 |
Practical Section Training for programmes |
4 practical hands on courses where
the SCOUTS programme methods and skills are demonstrated and practised. Also required
is practical First Aid Certificate (additional to the 8 hrs of Scout
programme training sessions – may be cross credited from work). |

4 |
Advanced Training |
a three day (or 10 night classes)
personal development course for leaders wishing to become leaders both in
SCOUTS and in the community. |
Adults who join Scouting as a leader are required to make a commitment to complete the first 3 stages within 18 months of joining the Scout Movement.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Scouting recognises prior learning and will credit topics learned with another organisation. You will be required to:

A weekend hands on practical
course on how to run a Cub camp. Completion is mandatory for Cub Leaders
wishing to lead a Cub Camp. |

A risk management course for Cub and
Kea leaders who wish to take their Keas or Cubs canoeing, rafting or swiming. |

Scout |
Sandford |
A leadership course for Scout
Patrol Leaders and their assistants as well as the Scout Leader. A full on
weekend course that will change the way your troop runs (for the better). |

Scout |
Cosgrove |
A fun but basic outdoor practical
skills course for Scouts and Scout Leaders. Teaches camping, cooking,
pioneering, survival and other outdoor skills. |

Venturer |
Cooksey |
A one or two day course that teaches
a mix of theory and practical leadership skills for Venturer Scouts and
Venturer Leaders. |

Venturer |
Velocity |
An introduction to Venturing for
new Venturers. |

Water Activities |
Charge Certificate |
A basic coastguard Day Skipper's
course supplemented by a one day practical course in handling Sea Scout
craft. Mandatory for any leader wishing to hold an activity on the water that
involves sailing or rowing. |
